North
American Reishi completes extract project with Professor H. Wagner
Gibsons, British
Columbia, Nov 1, 1997
North American
Reishi (NAR), the acknowledged leader in the field of medicinal mushrooms,
has a stated commitment to ongoing product research. In 1995, a study funded by
NAR and the Canadian National Science Council was successfully completed by the
University of British Columbia. This study, 'The Establishment of Analytical Procedures
for the Assay of Mushroom Polysaccharides', enabled NAR to measure this important
group of therapeutic compounds in its products.
Recently, president Jeff Chilton, in association with Dr. Hans Hendricks,
Head of Pre-clinical Research in the New Drug Development Office at the University
Hospital in Amsterdam, initiated a research project with Professor H. Wagner into
the immune enhancing properties of mushroom extracts. Professor Wagner is well
known in the area of natural products chemistry for his extensively published
work on echinacea.
The results
of the study, 'Carbon Clearance Studies on Several Extracts From Fungi',
showed significant levels of immune stimulation. The products tested were North
American Reishi's maitake mushroom extract, reishi mushroom extract, shiitake
mycelia extracts KS-2 and LEM. Each of the above products showed immune stimulating
activities 10 times greater on average than for typical high quality echinacea
extracts.
"Historically, medicinal mushroom extracts have been revered for their
immunological enhancement. Modern scientific research has confirmed this activity
and is very promising. To have a respected figure in the field of pharmacology
such as Professor Wagner substantiate this activity is exciting and increases
our ability to offer high quality products to the industry", states Jeff
Chilton.
