NAMMEX Mushroom Info, Press Releases, Newsletters, Articles & Books

|
|
As a service to
our customers NAMMEX has listed many of the popular articles on medicinal
mushrooms that have appeared over the last ten years. This listing is designed
to demonstrate the extent to which mushrooms have reached the general public through
consumer as well as trade publications. It is also designed to assist those looking
for further information on medicinal mushrooms.
We have also
listed books that we believe serve as excellent sources of more technical
information. There is a significant amount of published scientific research
on specific mushrooms that is too extensive to list here. Much of this literature
is published in the bibliographies of the books shown. |
NAMMEX Mushroom Information
 Educating people
about medicinal mushrooms is one of our primary roles at NAMMEX. We offer the
following articles and references to help you understand these mushrooms and make
informed decisions regarding their use. |
The
Health Benefits of Mushrooms
They
seem to come out of nowhere. In areas where there was no visible sign of their
presence, they suddenly appear - overnight, or so it seems. Such is the nature
of mushrooms, the higher order organisms of the world of fungi. Everyone has had
some encounter with mushrooms. Read

What
is the D-Faction in Maitake Mushrooms?
One of the most exciting new mushrooms to emerge is maitake, Grifola frondosa.
A choice edible that is highly prized by wild mushroom hunters, maitake is now
being cultivated thereby insuring a steady supply for the first time. A mushroom
without the common cap and gills, this polypore has multiple branching stems with
flowery ruffled caps. Although there is scant evidence of use in traditional Chinese
medicine, recent scientific research in Japan has shown maitake to contain significant
active polysaccharides. Read

What
You Should Know About Medicinal Mushrooms
Over the past twenty years there has been a steady flow of articles on reishi, shiitake, cordyceps, maitake and their healing properties. This flow has increased dramatically, to the point where in 2010, articles appear in many separate publications as well as youtube videos. Whereas there were only 2 or three mushroom products on the market twenty years ago, today there are hundreds, with more appearing each day. It is not surprising, considering that reishi has a history of use that spans 2 thousand years and is as highly revered in the Orient as ginseng. In fact, one could readily compare its market potential to ginseng. Read

Shiitake
Mushrooms
In North America, mushrooms have been feared more than prized, and in our markets
until very recently, we have been offered little more than the common button mushroom.
Yet in Europe and Asia, mushrooms occupy a special place and their markets offer
dozens of tasty species to choose from. What do they know that we have forgotten? Read more here... |

Books About Medicinal Mushrooms

Books About Medicinal Mushrooms
Cordyceps:
Tonic Food of Ancient China, by Kenneth Jones, Sylvan Press, Seattle,
1997. 52 pp. Ten thousand feet up, on the mountainous slopes of western China,
native Tibetans methodically search for the one of the most unique and treasured
herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Winter Worm, Summer Grass is the common
name given to Cordyceps sinensis, a small club-shaped fungus growing from
a caterpillar hibernating underneath the grassy ground. As a tonic herb, Cordyceps
is prized for its ability to restore vitality, increase sexual potency, clear
the lungs, and enhance endurance.
Medicinal
Mushrooms: An Exploration of Tradition, Healing and Culture, Christopher
Hobbs. Botanica Press, 1995. 252 pp. This book is one of a kind and serves as
not only an excellent introduction but also the ultimate reference to the uses
of medicinal mushrooms. This beautiful work contains colour photos of the most
widely used fungi in this category as well as an extensive bibliography of the
scientific research. The author is a well-known botanist and clinical herbalist
with a passion for mushrooms.
Medicinal
Mushrooms You Can Grow, Hajo Hadeler, Carriaga Press, 1995, 194 pp. An
excellent introduction to the kingdom of mushrooms. The first half of the book
explains the mushroom life cycle, it's role in ancient medical systems, and the
history of it's use. The second half outlines practical cultivation methods using
tools and materials found around the home. Great book for beginners.
Shiitake:
The Healing Mushroom, Kenneth Jones. Healing Arts Press, 1995. 120 pp
The most detailed and comprehensive work available on the medicinal properties
of Lentinus edodes. If you ever wondered why this mushroom is being championed
by chefs, clinical herbalists and naturopaths alike, the answers are within this
book.
Reishi:
Ancient Herb for Modern Times, Kenneth Jones. Sylvan Press, 1992, 34 pp.
Kenneth Jones is a medical writer who did the scientific research for the Willard
book. In this booklet he outlines the history, traditional use and science behind
the Reishi mushroom in an easy to read and succinct manner. Highly recommended
for those who wish an introduction to Reishi.

Willard as he travels from Hong Kong and Shanghai to San Francisco and Vancouver,
in a quest for knowledge of the medicinal uses of Ganoderma lucidum, one of the
most potent herbs in Traditional Oriental Medicine. Find out why Chinese Emperors
and Taoist sages alike revered this mushroom. Complete with the latest medical
research and clinical uses.
Icones
of Medicinal Fungi from China, by Ying, Ma, Zong, Wen and Mao. Science
Press, Beijing, 1987. 575 pp. A must-have book for anyone seriously interested
in medicinal mushrooms, this comprehensive tome lists all the mushrooms considered
by the Chinese to have some medicinal use. Each mushroom species includes information
on morphology, habitat, distribution and medicinal value. Of even greater value
are the beautiful illustrations by renowned artist Mao Xiolan.
The
Mushroom Cultivator: A Practical Guide to Growing Mushrooms at Home, by
J.S. Chilton and Paul Stamets. Agarikon Press, Olympia, 1983. 415 pp. A comprehensive
and detailed guide to growing mushrooms at home or on a small commercial scale.
